SEASONAL COLOUR ANALYSIS
- by Colour Refinery
What Is Personal Colour Analysis?
Personal colour analysis studies how colour interacts with your natural skin, hair, and eye tones. By draping different fabrics and shades against your face under controlled lighting, we identify which colours make your complexion look brighter, healthier, and more balanced — and which ones quietly work against you.
Why It Matters
The right colours don't just look nice — they change how people read your face. Wearing your colours can make you look more rested, more confident, and more polished, often without changing anything else about your look.
Wearing the wrong ones can make you look tired or washed out, even on a good skin day. Once you know your palette, shopping, makeup, and styling all get faster and more decisive.
How Your Season Is Found: Hue, Value, and Chroma
Every colour analysis — in person or digital — reads the same three dimensions of your colouring, and hue, value, and chroma are the three levers that decide which palette actually suits you. Miss one, especially hue, and you can end up in the wrong season entirely, which is why each one gets a proper look rather than a guess.
Your specific combination of the three is what gives you a season.
What Is a Colour Season?
A "season" is a name for a coordinated set of colours that share the same undertone, depth, and saturation
- the exact combination that happens to suit a particular skin, hair, and eye colouring.
There are four base seasons: Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter.

The 16 Colour Season system
The four base seasons are a starting point, not the finish line. Sorting everyone into just Spring, Summer, Autumn, or Winter forces a meaningful number of people — especially those whose colouring sits between warm & cool or medium-light or medium-deep, rather than clearly at one extreme — into a "closest match" that doesn't quite flatter them. Breaking each season down further raises the accuracy of the match considerably.
At Colour Refinery, we work with 16 sub-seasons
— a system built by blending Korean, Japanese, and Western methodology to place you as precisely as possible.
If you're just starting to explore your colours, the basic four are a fine place to begin. But the precision — the difference between a palette that's technically fine and one that actually makes you look brighter, rested, and pulled-together — lives in finding your exact one of sixteen.
